ESL Present Simple

Learn how to use the present simple in English. In this video we take a look at the present simple. We look at some of its rules and common uses and present some examples to help beginners.

Okay, guys. So today we are going to be talking about the present simple.

Okay. So here’s an example of the present simple. “I dance every day.” Now, I wish I could dance like this guy, but unfortunately I can’t. And I wish I could do that move. I wish I could do this handstand kind of thing, but I can’t. But the present simple is what we use for things that occur very frequently. So we could say, “I danced yesterday.” “I danced today at some point.” Or, “In the future, I would probably dance again.” So, because it’s an event that occurs often and it’s something you regularly do, we would use, “I dance everyday.” And that’s why we use the present simple.

So let’s take another look at the present simple. So we use it for things that are generally true. We know that the sky is blue, and that’s basically a fact. In this case, we would use the present simple, so ‘is’ would the verb that we use; ‘The sky is blue.’ Another fact could be, the world is round, for example. In this case, we would use the present simple.

Another occasion, as I’ve explained a second ago, is something that happens all the time or repeatedly. For maybe habits or just generally things that you do every day maybe, we would use the present simple. For example, ‘I go to work every day,’ or maybe, ‘I learn English every morning.’
